8 JANUARY 2006 - An overdue news update

This site has been dormant long enough. So... here's word from Andy on what he's been up to:

Dear Readers,

There have been many goings on throughout the fall, including post-production on my short film and my work as programming director of the Bijou Theater.

In early September I returned from a Labor Day weekend at the Telluride Film Festival in Telluride, Colorado. Attending the festival's annual Student Symposium, I was fortunate to meet new friends (hello to Sergey, Anna and Nicole!) and get an early look at some tremendous films. The symposium also includes discussion sessions with filmmakers who have work in the festival. Personal favorites included Michael Haneke (CACHE) and Jean-Pierre and Luc Dardenne (L'ENFANT), as well as novelist Don DeLillo (acting as the festival's guest director) and theatre/opera director Peter Sellars.

Back from Telluride, the Bijou's fall schedule was already underway, and it's been a busy and rewarding semester. We screened more than 25 films in our regular programming and began preparing for the Bijou's move into a new theater space as part of a renovation of the Iowa Memorial Union. Included in our fundraising efforts for the new theater, the Bijou will host a performance by the amazing Alloy Orchestra in June at Hancher Auditorium in Iowa City. Keep an eye on the Bijou's website if you're interested in theater news.

On the filmmaking front, work continues on my short, which is nearing completion. There will be a second news post with updates on the film.

I've also been slack in updating my indieWIRE blog, but I do plan to post entries more regularly in 2006. One entry I did write, in response to a report on BROKEBACK MOUNTAIN on the Drudge Report, actually earned me an invitation to speak about the film (albeit briefly) on the BBC's radio programme World Have Your Say. So there are readers, as long as I actually provide content.

Thank you much for your interest in my work, and please do check back for further news updates.

Best wishes,

Andy

12 AUGUST 2005 - Short film shoot wraps in Ames

Andy recently wrapped production on his latest project, a short film shot July 24-26 in his hometown of Ames, Iowa.

The silent film was shot on Kodak's black-and-white Super 8 Tri-X reversal stock. Footage was processed by Forde Labs in Seattle, and is currently being transferred to video for editing by Flying Spot Film Transfer.

The composition and recording of an orignal score will follow editing this fall, and the film will be ready to go for festival submissions by spring.

Here's a production still of Andy checking the framing of a shot from high-above:

12 JULY 2005 - 'Round Midnight opens outdoor film series

'ROUND MIDNIGHT preceded a free, outdoor screening of "The Wizard of Oz" in downtown Iowa City on July 9.

The screening kicked off the Saturday Night Free Movie Series -- an outdoor film screening every Saturday night in July on the lawn of the University of Iowa's Pentacrest, projected on a screen hung from the columns of Macbride Hall.

The series plans to showcase short works by local filmmakers before each week's feature presentation.
